A decade of growth
Our story, season by season
From a small farm in Idanha-a-Nova to an international network of seed guardians.
Living Seeds is born
Founded in Idanha-a-Nova with the mission of recovering traditional varieties and producing organic and biodynamic seeds of vegetables, flowers and aromatic herbs.
Restoring the Quinta da Herdade do Couto da Várzea
We began reclaiming 25 hectares of production land abandoned for over 10 years. Cleared brambles, built tunnels, installed the nursery and processing building.
Scaling seed production
First farmers join the network. We began multiplying seeds locally using 100% organic production methods (MPB) — a first in Portugal.
First steps towards recovering traditional varieties
Traditional variety recovery begins alongside our tomato breeding program, selecting varieties with drought resistance and climate adaptability.
Network of multipliers
Our work expanded from one-off projects to a dedicated network of ~35 farmers working as 100% MPB multipliers, producing the finest seeds across Portugal.
Old buildings brought back to life
We completed the restoration of Herdade do Couto da Várzea's historic buildings, preserving the original style while upgrading infrastructure for seed storage and treatment.
International expansion
Expansion into German, Swiss and Austrian markets. Portuguese seeds, grown by our network of producers, begin reaching European gardeners and farmers.
Six traditional varieties officially registered
After 6 years of selecting, describing, and multiplying — Pau Roxo das Seis Marias, Murtosa, Sabugal, Cereja de Inverno and others enter the national variety catalog.
Moganga de Geraz registered
A traditional pumpkin variety, patiently recovered by one of our multipliers, is officially catalogued — another seed saved from disappearing forever.
Seeds reach Japan
We began exporting to Japan — a market with deep reverence for seed quality, genetic purity and the cultural heritage carried within each variety.
First heterogeneous biological material registered in Portugal
Aurora Violeta and Marro — two broad bean varieties of heterogeneous biological material — are registered. Genetically more diverse, more stable, and more adaptable to climate and soil variation.
